Norwich worsted pattern book, approximately 1786-1793, 1831

 Item — Volume: Col-50, acc. 65x695.1
Identifier: Col-50, acc. 65x695.1

Scope and Contents

Consists of approximately 500 swatches of various textile fabrics, including fine examples of "camelots," "sattins," "tabourets," "fleurets," "callemandres," "camelottines," "harlequins," and "grandines." Some facing pages contain manuscript notes in French, giving specific names for the types of fabrics that follow. Nothing indicates the manufacturer of the fabrics. A faint manuscript inscription on the front free endpaper indicates a British origin, however. It reads: "September 8, 1831. The Coronation of his Majesty King Willm. 4th took place with that of his Consort Queen Adelaide." A faint pencil sketch of a house also appears on this page.

Florence Montgomery, "Textiles in America 1650-1870," identifies these swatches as Norwich worsteds, and supplies 1785 date. However, a researcher suggests 1786-1793, the period between the Eden Treaty of 1786, a commercial agreement between Great Britain and France, and the outbreak of war between those counties in 1793.
