Daniel Smith account book
Scope and Contents
From 1772 to about 1807, Daniel Smith used this volume to keep his accounts for making and repairing shoes. Some day labor is also recorded. Beginning in 1803, the accounts are settled by John Smith, and the entries change to agricultural commodities. Some of these latter accounts (on, or facing, leaves 74, 86, 102, and 107) are "setled ... from the begining of the world up to this day." Also includes school district receipts for 1787-1807 (leaf 61); an account of "sundries of articles that I got and delivered to build a scholl" in 1795 (leaf 67); and disbursements for school district 3, and from the literary fund, both in 1830 (leaf 90). On leaf 139, a list of building materials "for the house" in 1841 is given. Finally, facing leaf 142, Daniel Smith recorded the birth and death dates of members of his family.
