Photographs
Scope and Contents
This artificial and still open collection contains photographs and stereopticon slides, primarily from the second half of the 19th century. A wide variety of photographic processes is represented including collotypes, cyanotypes, platinotypes, albumen, and gelatin prints. The photographs are both amateur and professional, snapshots and posed portraits.
Many of the photographs depict domestic life and show furnished interiors and household artifacts. Others show buildings and views, including shop interiors. The stereocards include European and American views and interiors as well as scenes from stage productions and humorous cards. There are portrait photographs as well. Three stereocard viewers are part of the collection. (One is a table-top model and is in the Downs Collection Reading Room.)
