Buchter Chair Company order book & stencils
Content Description
The collection consists of an order book and approximately forty stencils used to paint furniture. The order book was kept by Henry Buchter for the Buchter Chair Company for the year of 1872. Orders list various types and styles of seating furniture, including rocking chairs, table chairs, arm chairs, nursing chairs, cottage chairs, dining chairs, and stools. Customers listed were not only from the local area of Louisville, Kentucky, but also from Nebraska, Kansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, and California.
The stencils include designs for people, scrolls, and classical and floral motifs. They were cut from scraps of paper, some with writing or printing on them.

Biographical / Historical
The Buchter Chair Company was established around 1850 in Louisville, Kentucky, by Henry Buchter, and specialized in manufacturing seating furniture. In 1875, the company was sold, and was eventually renamed the Louisville Chair Company.
