This collection is organized into two series - the Samuel Talcott papers and the Henry Newberry papers. The Samuel Talcott papers include correspondence with family and businessmen, various estate papers related to estates for which Talcott served as the executor, accounts of Samuel Talcott's property, and various bills and receipts. The Henry Newberry papers include correspondence with family and business colleagues, as well as records related to the execution of Henry Newberry's estate.

Biographical / Historical

Samuel Talcott was born in 1787 to Gad Talcott (1745-1830) and Abigail Root (1747-1808) in Glastonbury, Connecticut. He was a farmer in the community of Gilead, in Hebron, Connecticut, and a deacon in the Gilead Congregational Church. Talcott died in November 1879.

Henry Newberry was born in 1783 in Windsor, Connecticut to General Roger Newberry and Eunice Ely. He was a graduate of Yale University, and was a lawyer and merchant. Newberry inherited land from his father in the Connecticut Western Reserve of Ohio, and in 1824, moved to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio with his family. He established a saw mill and oil mill on the property. He was elected the first mayor and postmaster of Cuyahoga Falls. Newberry died in 1854.
