Content Description

The collection contains 280 leaves of well-detailed architectural and furniture drawings and paintings, as well as four photographs. The leaves are minimally signed by the creator, but a majority include dimensions for the objects. There are black and white drawings as well as watercolors. Some leaves include a note belonging to “John H. Buri, Designer, Philadelphia, Pa,” “Chapman Dec. Co., 1608 Walnut, Phila. Pa,” and “Specialty Woodworking Company of Philadelphia.” Some leaves are captioned with the type of furniture or architecture, the client, and/or the location.

Biographical Note

John Henry Buri was born August 8, 1886, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked as a designer under companies including Chapman Decorating Co., 1608 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He passed away in Upper Darby Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on February 19, 1936.
