Biographical / Historical

William L. Price and M. Hawley McLanahan, architects in partnership as Price & McLanahan, founded the Rose Valley Association near Philadelphia, Pa. as an artistic community adhering to the principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement. While the association's active life lasted only about eight years, some projects associated with it continued at least until 1971.

Summary

Collection includes information about the Rose Valley Association, the Rose Valley Press, and the professional work of M. Hawley McLanahan (and his various partnerships). The papers document the formation of the Rose Valley Association, its financial affairs, real estate holdings, and tax records; the Rose Valley Folk Theatre; the printing project of the association, the Rose Valley Press, including some printing blocks; and some of the building projects of the Price & McLanahan (and successors) architectural firm, including buildings in Florida, a proposed resort in North Carolina, a Hudson River bridge, and Atlantic City hotels. Some photocopied materials recording the history of Rose Valley, the Rose Valley Players, and two of William Price's plays are part of the collection. Also included are photographs of H.W. Hertzel, secretary of the Rose Valley Association, interiors of his home, and furniture attributed to him. A much more complete statement of the scope and contents of the collection will be found on the finding aid.
