Biographical / Historical

Samuel Talcott was a 19th century resident of Gilead in the town of Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut; census records listed him as a farmer. Some of the documents in the collection call him "Captain" and others refer to him as "Deacon" a position he held in the Gilead Congregational Church. Samuel Talcott was born in 1787 in Glastonbury, Conn. His parents were Gad Talcott (1745-1830) and Abigail Root (1747-1808). A genealogy web site lists three wives for Samuel Talcott: Harriet Warner (1795-1820), Hester Reynolds (1789-1827), and Asenath Morgan (1803-1863). Samuel died in November 1879.

Biographical / Historical

Talcott had a number of children, most of whom are represented in this collection, particularly in receipts for school tuition. His sons were Henry Wait Warner (1820-1900), Elisha Ely (called Ely, 1831-1858, died in Chicago), William Stuart (1834-1898), Samuel Augustus (1838-1899), and John Morgan (1841-1869). His daughters were Harriet Hester (born 1827), Mary Elizabeth (1832-1867), Catherine Asneath (1835-1848), A. Georgianna (first name listed variously as Augusta or Asenath, born 1837), and Sarah Eliza (born 1843).

Summary

Receipts, deeds, and other documents pertaining to the family of Samuel Talcott of Gilead, Connecticut, or to his administration of the estates of deceased neighbors. About half of the collection is made up of receipts for Talcott's expenses during the 1800s. Money is spent on children's schooling (including music and dancing lessons), newspaper and magazine subscriptions, salt, flour, sugar, physicians, glass tumblers, china cups and saucers, a sewing machine, refined oil, a wide variety of textiles, and other things needed for the running of a household. Between 1816 and 1846, Talcott served as administrator of several estates, keeping the receipts for the paying of debts and the distribution of the property. The balance of the collection consists of deeds, 1802-1815; some letters, 1826-1902; a few poems and short compositions; and a small number of other undated manuscripts.

Summary

It is not known how materials pertaining to people and places in Danbury, Connecticut relate to the Talcott family of Tolland County. Included in these materials are a bill from Union College for the tuition of Horatio Wildman, checks drawn on the Danbury Bank, materials related to the Ryder family, and a high school graduation program from 1892.
