Albert R. Whittier scrapbook albums
Scope and Contents
Contains purchase records for Whittier's collections of books and antiques. Volume 1 contains bills and receipts from used book dealers (particularly Goodspeed's Book Shop, Charles E. Lauriat Co., N. J. Bartlett & Co., and Maggs Bros.) and antique furniture dealers (particularly Israel Sack, Inc.). Volume 2 consists of mounted photographs--many of which have identifications typed on cards and stapled above--of some of the furniture recorded in vol. 1. Penciled numbers key most of the photographs back to the invoices. The book purchases show a strong collecting interest in Rudyard Kipling.

Biographical / Historical
Albert R. Whittier, Jr. collected books and antique furniture. He was a Boston real estate broker with C. W. Whittier & Bro. (according to a 1903 edition of The Boston Directory). He was born in 1872, the son of Caroline Amelia Woodbury and Albert Rufus Whittier. He had a brother Charles Woodbury Whittier, probably the principal in the real estate firm, in which Albert would have been the brother. Albert died in 1945. He apparently never married (the 1940 census listed him as single), and lived with his sisters Harriet and Isabelle. Others in the family also seem to have been collectors.
