George W. Bowman daybooks
Scope and Contents
Consists of daily record of work done by this New Jersey blacksmith in the second quarter of the 19th century. He makes or repairs a wide variety of goods including chains, wagon parts, hinges, hoops for barrels, horse shoes, a coffee mill, plows and scythes, and the like. A few items are laid in.

Biographical / Historical
George W. Bowman was a New Jersey blacksmith, working in Fairfield and Caldwell in Essex County. In the 1870 census, he was listed as a farrier; in the 1880 census, he was listed as a retired blacksmith. He was married to Ann Condit (1816-1892). (She was the second wife. Her father was James Condit, a painter.) Their son William T. Bowman (born 1848) was a carpenter and builder and became health officer of East Orange, New Jersey. Other children were Andrew, Roswell, Hettie (Mrs. Baldwin), Jonathan, and Samuel.
