Hazen Richardson account book
Scope and Contents
Contains accounts of Hazen Richardson, a carpenter and cabinetmaker from Stockbridge, Vermont, with over 65 individuals. Includes such entries as "to trundle Bedstid," "to one Beauro," "to Six Citchin Chairs," "to one Candle Stand." Other than the price, the accounts do not give any information about the furniture, for example the species of wood used. The one exception is a charge for a cherry coffin. Also includes entries for manual labor ("to myself two dys work on the Schoolhouse"), for tailoring and cobbling ("to Cuting two pear of Pantaloons"), and for commodities like tobacco and corn. The accounts give no details at all about the carpentry work which Richardson performed. Many of the accounts for labor give the first names of workmen; they are not otherwise identified.
Includes 7 clippings (1 pasted, 6 laid in) that were part of the volume when it was used in the 1830s as a poetry scrapbook. Several names, including Miss Clarissa A. Priest of Peru, Vermont, Elmira Jenny, Cyntha [sic] Taggart, Maria Cozzens, Henrietta, and Alice E. Richardson are written on scattered pages, in different hands.
