Scope and Contents

Contains signed receipts from people for whom Jutau auctioned merchandise. The receipts are dated 7 June to 21 October 1784. A wide variety of goods were auctioned, ranging from household and personal items, to produce, to the ever popular "sundries." More specifically, auctioned items include beds, shoes, buckles, barrels of nails, gold watches, linens, silk handkerchiefs, watch keys, chaises, "paper hangs," horses, wine, indigo, gin, cotton, gauze, cordage, turpentine, sugar, cider, and tea.

Starting at the back of Jutau's receipt book are 10 pages of unrelated receipts for a "J. Conant" in Greenwich, Connecticut (1814-1815) and in Monson, Mass. (1834-1835). The initials A.C. (for Andrew Conant?) are inked on the spine and inside front cover.

Biographical / Historical

John Jutau was an auctioneer in Boston, Massachusetts, in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He died around 1820 (the date of the last Boston city directory in which he was listed) and was survived by his wife, Mary.
