Biographical / Historical

Grace Gardiner Smith was born in 1873 in Oil City, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of John Gardiner and Sarah Siverly. Smith graduated from University of Michigan Medical School in 1895, and worked as a practicing physician. She married Myron Walter Smith; they had three daughters. They settled in Red Wing, Minnesota.

In addition to her work as a physician, Smith also served as the physician for the state Girls Training School, served on the board of directors for the Red Cross, Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), county health association, the public schools, the public library, and the Women's Community Association.
