Nebraska cattle ranch ledger and receipts

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: Col-1049

Content Description

This collection consists of a ledger and receipts that were kept by the owner of a cattle ranch in Nebraska. Based on the cattle brand embossed into the front cover of the ledger, they were possibly kept by either Edward Ormesher of Valentine, Nebraska or Ezra E. Tucker of Hyannis, Nebraska. There is also a very faint inscription on the front cover of the ledger above the cattle brand that reads "Metzger Bros." This may refer to the Metzger ranch in Merriman, Nebraska.

The ledger mostly comprises accounts for laborers that worked on the ranch. Each entry records when the person began work, any goods, such as groceries, purchased by or for them, payments made to the person, dates of travel, and dates of leaving or returning to employment at the ranch. Some entries also note that the man's wife accompanied him, or that the wife was also employed at the ranch.
